LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania baseball program saw one of its fifth-year seniors become the first student-athlete ever to be named East Coast Conference Player of the Week as Sheldon Johnson(Pittsburgh, Penn./Woodland Hills) was given the honor after his torrid start to the season at the Peachtree City Classic.
The Lincoln baseball program became a member of the East Coast Conference during the 2019-20 athletic calendar year after the CIAA dropped the sport following the 2017 season.
Johnson, an outfielder from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, exploded offensively versus Morehouse College, setting career-highs with five RBIs, three hits, three runs scored, and two home runs in just a little over seven innings of play as the game was ended mid-eighth due to rain.
The 5-foot-10 alumni of Woodland Hills High School led the Lions in batting average (.429), slugging percentage (1.286), OPS (1.786), runs scored (3), hits (3), RBIs (5), home runs (2), and total bases (9) while also coaxing a free pass in the season opener against Clark Atlanta.
Gabriel Sanchez (Anthony, N.M./Gadsden), a sophomore from Anthony, New Mexico, was listed as an Honorable Mention for ECC Pitcher of the Week after his brilliant opening day start in which he allowed a career-low one hit over six scoreless innings with three strikeouts en route to recording the team’s first opening day victory since 2017 over Clark Atlanta.
Johnson, Sanchez, and the rest of the diamond dwellers from just outside Oxford, Pennsylvania return to the field Tuesday afternoon for a road doubleheader at Coker University with first pitch slated for noon in Hartsville, South Carolina.
